My FM Journey: From Security Officer to Control Room Supervisor

I started my security career in hospitality over 15 years ago and recently transitioned into facilities management through the Medirest career pathway program. It has really changed my perspective on growth and opportunity. Joining as a security officer, thanks to the pathway, I moved into a supervisory role and now oversee multiple units as a control room supervisor.

My training covered leadership, people management, financial skills, and my company’s unique excellent operational approach. It was a hands-on experience that complemented my previous studies and has helped me develop both professionally and personally.

What I enjoy most about working in FM is the social aspect-collaborating across teams, units and with the public. This is what keeps the role dynamic and rewarding for me.

Key skills for success in security FM include understanding the specific security nuances of your sector – they are all quite different. Mastering a company’s management style and being adaptable to change and adapt is important. But a willingness to learn every day is essential.

For anyone considering a career in security or FM, it is a growing industry with continuous employment opportunities and the chance to make a real contribution to society’s safety. For those already in the field, I highly recommend engaging with career development programs-such as Medirest’s career pathway - they can open doors you did not know existed.
