Security in 2026: Balancing Technology and Humanity
As we step into 2026, the security industry faces a pivotal moment. At Medirest, we see a future where innovation and human expertise work hand in hand to create safer, smarter environments.
Legislation changes.
Following the Manchester Arena attack, the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, commonly known as Martyn's Law. This legislation, which received Royal Assent in April 2025, mandates that owners and operators of certain publicly accessible venues and events must take steps to plan for and mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack. Evolving threats mean organisations must adapt quickly.
New technologies from advanced CCTV systems to integrated emergency protocols will make security more proactive and efficient. These tools will save time, reduce risk and provide real-time insights. But technology alone isn’t enough.
The human touch.
The human factor remains critical. Mental health awareness and training for security personnel will take centre stage, helping to break cycles of stress and aggression. Recruitment strategies will shift to attract the right calibre of professionals, making roles more appealing and sustainable.
There is a need to attract more women into the industry, and we are developing a Women’s Workshop for security. We also need to train personnel around the terminology used for accessing psychology to break the trauma cycle and assist in lowering aggression. Negativity around the industry persists and the recruitment into the roles is changing to ensure the right calibre of personnel are recruited.
Technology cannot be forgotten.
Robotics and automation will support operations, but they won’t replace human judgment especially in complex or hostile environments. Instead, expect a more people-focused approach, enhanced by tech that empowers rather than replaces. To ensure all voices are heard, body cameras can be worn to translate over 100 languages to help deliver the action that is required.
Data driven.
Data will drive decisions, but authenticity and empathy will define success. Collecting and interpreting data responsibly will be key, ensuring security strategies remain ethical and effective.
At Medirest, we’re passionate about leading this change. Through continuous learning, innovative solutions and a commitment to wellbeing, we’re shaping a future where security is not just about protection it’s about creating environments where people feel safe, valued, and supported.
2026 is about balance: technology for precision, people for purpose.
